Steryl Esters are phytosterols which have been esterified with a vegetable fatty acid such as oletic acid. They are obtained from vacuum steam distillation of edible vegetable oil products and are widely used in retail food products where a health claim is desired. They are more easily incorporated into food applications than the granular form of phytosterols.
Steryl esters contain phytosterols, which when taken as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. Health claims relating to the cardiovascular benefits of steryl esters in certain food products are permitted in many countries.
Steryl esters are an off-white, viscous material having a very slight vegetable oil-like odor and flavor. Normal storage practices for vegetable oil should be followed. These should include minimizing contact with air through the use of nitrogen blanketing, avoiding elevated storage temperatures, and avoiding unnecessary contact with transition metals or alkaline substances.
Steryl esters are produced under certified ISO 9001, 14001 and 22000 programs, and are certified Kosher and Halal. Anti-oxidants may be added to extend shelf life of the steryl esters. Non-GM products are available on request.
